The Bill of Rights Essay examples -- Politics Political Civics
The Bill of Rights After the Revolution, the States adopted their own constitutions, many of which contained a Bill of Rights. The Americans still faced the challenge of creating a central government for their new nation. In 1777 the Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation, which were ratified in 1781. Under the Articles, the states retained their ââ¬Å"sovereignty, freedom and independence,â⬠while the national government was kept weak and inferior. Over the next few years it became evident that the system of government that had been chosen was not strong enough to completely settle and defend the frontier, regulating trade, currency and commerce, and organizing thirteen states into one union. So in the summer of 1787 delegates from the twelve states convened in Philadelphia to draft a new Constitution. They proposed a strong national government that would assume many of the powers previously imposed upon the states. (1) ââ¬Å"No sooner than had the Continental Congress laid the proposed Constitution before the people for ratification, â⬠Irving Brant writes, ââ¬Å"than a cry went up: it contained no Bill of Rights.â⬠(2) People objected because the liberties they had fought for in the Revolution were not being protected by the Constitution, and then could be ignored by the federal government. The Anti-Federalist called for another convention to outline a Bill of Rights before the Constitution was approved. The Federalist, fearing that the progress would unravel completely, urged immediate ratification. With the understanding of a Bill of Rights to follow later. Eventually the Federalist prevailed. By 1788, eleven states had ratified the Constitution. Six states , however, sent Congress proposals for amendments, modeled on their state constitutions and designed to protect individual rights. James Madison realized that the public desire for a Bill of Rights could not be ignored. In 1789, after reviewing the state proposed amendments and the state Bill of Rights to be considered by Congress, he proposed nine amendments to be considered by Congress for insertion into the text of the Constitution. After deliberation, debate, and some alterations, the House and Senate voted to add the amendments on the end of the Constitution and sent twelve amendments to the states for ratification. Only ten of theses were ratified and from those are what we kno... ...l want to be protected and assured of our freedoms and rights and donââ¬â¢t like it when those rights are threatened. The initial Constitution and Bill of Rights wasnââ¬â¢t written to include everyone in the rights and freedoms of citizens. And it was seen then that our needs as a nation would change and these documents would need to be able to expand and grow with the country. The Bill of Rights has been one of the corner stones that we as Americans have enjoyed and taken for granted for the many years since its creation. The rights granted to us in the Bill of rights are the same right many people of the world are still fighting for even to the very day. We as Americans have become so accustom to having these rights we often take these rights for granted. There is no way of denying itââ¬â¢s historical significance, if you just stop and try and imagine your life without your freedoms and rights. These freedoms are what makes this country what it is and it also allows the people within the United States to enjoy the freedom dreamed about by the founders of this country as well. But as a country of whole, we take our rights and freedoms that our ancestors fought for, for granted.

The Lost Duke of Wyndham Chapter Eleven
What Jack saw took his breath away. ââ¬Å"No one comes here but me,â⬠Grace said softly. ââ¬Å"I don't know why.â⬠The light, the ripple through the air as the sun slid through the uneven glass of the ancient windowsâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"In the winter especially,â⬠she continued, her voice just a little hesitant, ââ¬Å"it's magic. I can't explain it. I think the sun dips lower. And with the snowâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ It was the light. It had to be. It was the way the light trembled, and fell on her. His heart clenched. Like a fist it hit him ââ¬â this need, this overwhelming urgeâ⬠¦He could not speak. He could not even begin to articulate it, but ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Jack?â⬠she whispered, and it was just enough to break his trance. ââ¬Å"Grace.â⬠It was just one word, but it was a benediction. This went beyond desire, it was need. It was an indefinable, inexplicable, living, pulsing thing within him that could only be tamed by her. If he didn't hold her, didn't touch her in that very moment, something within him would die. To a man who tried to treat life as an endless series of ironies and witticisms, nothing could have been more terrifying. He reached out and roughly pulled her to him. He was not delicate, nor was he gentle. He couldn't be. He couldn't manage it, not now, not when he needed her so desperately. ââ¬Å"Grace,â⬠he said again, because that's what she was to him. It was impossible that he'd known her but a day. She was his grace, his Grace, and it was like she had always been there within him, waiting for him to finally open his eyes and find her. His hands cupped her face. She was a priceless treasure, and yet he could not force himself to touch her with the reverence she deserved. Instead, his fingers were clumsy, his body rough and pounding. Her eyes ââ¬â so clear, so blue ââ¬â he thought he might drown in them. He wanted to drown in them, to lose himself within her and never leave. His lips touched hers, and then ââ¬â of this he was certain ââ¬â he was lost. There was nothing more for him but this woman, in this moment, maybe even for all his moments thereafter. ââ¬Å"Jack,â⬠she sighed. It was the first time all morning she'd used his name, and it sent waves of desire pulsing through his already taut body. ââ¬Å"Grace,â⬠he said in return, because he was afraid to say anything else, afraid that for the first time in his life his glib tongue would fail him, and his words would come out wrong. He'd say something and it would mean too little, or perhaps he'd say something and it would mean too much. And then she would know, if by some miracle she did not already, that she had bewitched him. He kissed her hungrily, passionately, with all the fire within him. His hands slid down her back, memorizing the gentle slope of her spine, and when he reached the more lush curves of her bottom, he could not help it ââ¬â he pressed her more firmly against him. He was aroused, and wound more tightly than he'd ever imagined possible, and all he could think ââ¬â if he was thinking at all ââ¬â was that he needed her close, closer. Whatever he could get, whatever he could have ââ¬â right now he would take it. ââ¬Å"Grace,â⬠he said again, one of his hands moving to the spot where her dress touched her skin, just at her collarbone. She flinched at his touch, and he stilled, barely able to imagine how he would tear himself away. But her hand covered his, and she whispered, ââ¬Å"I was surprised.â⬠It was only then that he once again breathed. Fingers shaking, he traced the delicately scalloped edge of her bodice. Her pulse seemed to leap beneath his touch, and never in his life had he been so aware of a single sound ââ¬â the quiet rasp of air, brushing across her lips. ââ¬Å"You are so beautiful,â⬠he whispered, and the amazing thing was that he was not even looking at her face. It was merely her skin, the pale, milky hue of it, the soft blush of pink that followed his fingers. Softly, gently, he bowed his head and brushed his lips along the hollow at the base of her throat. She gasped then, or maybe it was a moan, and her head slowly fell back in silent agreement. Her arms were around him and her hands in his hair, and then, without even considering what it meant, he swept her into his arms and carried her across the room, to the low, wide settee that sat near the window, bathed in the magical sunlight that had seduced them both. For a moment, kneeling at her side, he could do nothing but look at her, then one of his trembling hands reached forth to stroke her cheek. She was staring up at him, and in her eyes there was wonder, and anticipation, and yes, a little nervousness. But there was also trust. She wanted him. Him. No one else. She had never been kissed before, of that he was certain. She could have done. Of that he was even more certain. A woman of Grace's beauty did not reach her age without having refused (or rebuffed) multiple advances. She had waited. She had waited for him. Still kneeling beside her, he bent to kiss her, his hand moving down the side of her face to her shoulder, then to her hip. His passion grew deeper, and hers, too; she was returning his kiss with an unschooled eagerness that left him breathless with desire. ââ¬Å"Grace, Grace,â⬠he moaned, his voice lost in the warmth of her mouth. His hand found the hem of her dress and then slid under, grasping the slender circle of her ankle. And then upâ⬠¦upâ⬠¦to her knee. And higher. Until he could bear it no longer, and he moved to the settee himself, partially covering her with his own body. His lips had moved to her neck, and he felt her sharply indrawn breath on his cheek. But she did not say no. She did not cover his hand with hers and bring him to a stop. She did nothing but whisper his name and arch her hips beneath him. She couldn't have known what the movement had meant, could never have known what it would do to him, but that ever-so-slight pressure beneath him, rising up against his own desire, brought him to the very peak of need. He kissed his way down her neck, to the gentle swell of her breast, his lips finding the very spot at the edge of her bodice that his fingers had so recently traveled. He lifted himself away from her, just a bit, just enough so he could slide his finger under the hem and slide it down, or maybe push her up ââ¬â whichever was needed to free her to his devotion. But just when his hand had moved toward his destination, just when he'd had one glorious second to cup the fullness of her, skin to skin, the stiff edge peaking in his palm, she cried out. Softly, with surprise. And dismay. ââ¬Å"No, I can't.â⬠With jerky movements she scrambled to her feet, righting her dress. Her hands were shaking. More than shaking. They seemed filled with a foreign, nervous energy, and when he looked in her eyes, it was as if a knife had pierced him. It was not revulsion, it was not fear. What he saw was anguish. ââ¬Å"Grace,â⬠he said, moving toward her. ââ¬Å"What is wrong?â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm sorry,â⬠she said, stepping back. ââ¬Å"I ââ¬â I shouldn't have. Not now. Not until ââ¬â â⬠One of her hands flew up to cover her mouth. ââ¬Å"Not untilâ⬠¦? Grace? Not until what?â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm sorry,â⬠she said again, confirming his belief that those were the worst two words in the English language. She bobbed a quick, perfunctory curtsy. ââ¬Å"I must go.â⬠And then she ran from the room, leaving him quite alone. He stared at the empty doorway for a full minute, trying to figure out just what had happened. And it was only when he finally stepped into the hall that he realized he hadn't a clue how to get back to his bedchamber. Grace dashed through Belgrave, half walking, half skippingâ⬠¦runningâ⬠¦whatever it was she needed to do to reach her room with the most equal balance of dignity and speed. If the servants saw her ââ¬â and she couldn't imagine they didn't; they seemed positively everywhere this morning ââ¬â they must have wondered at her distress. The dowager would not expect her. Surely she would think she was still showing Mr. Audley the house. Grace had at least an hour before she might need to show her face. Dear God, what had she done? If she had not finally remembered herself, remembered who he was, and who he might be, she would have let him continue. She'd wanted it. She'd wanted it with a fervor that had shocked her. When he'd taken her hand, when he'd pulled her to him, he awakened something within her. No. It had been awakened two nights earlier. On that moonlit night, standing outside the carriage, something had been born within her. And nowâ⬠¦ She sat upon her bed, wanting to bury herself in the covers but instead just sitting there, staring at the wall. There was no going back. One couldn't ever not have been kissed once the deed was done. With a nervous breath, maybe even a frantic laugh, she covered her face with her hands. Could she possibly have chosen anyone less suitable with whom to fall in love? Not that this was the measure of her feelings, she hastened to reassure herself, but she was not so much of a fool that she could not recognize her leanings. If she let herselfâ⬠¦If she let himâ⬠¦ She would fall in love. Good heavens. Either he was a highwayman, and now she was destined to be the consort of an outlaw, or he was the true Duke of Wyndham, which meant ââ¬â She laughed because really, this was funny. It had to be funny. If it wasn't funny, then it could only be tragic, and she didn't think she could manage that just now. Wonderful. Perhaps she was falling in love with the Duke of Wyndham. Now that was appropriate. Let's see, how many ways was this a disaster? He was her employer, for one, he owned the house in which she lived, and his rank was so far above hers as to be nearly immeasurable. And then there was Amelia. She and Thomas certainly did not suit, but she had every right to expect that she would be the Duchess of Wyndham upon her marriage. Grace could not imagine how crass and overreaching she would appear to the Willoughbys ââ¬â her good friends ââ¬â if she were seen to be throwing herself at the new duke. Grace closed her eyes and touched the tips of her fingers to her lips. If she breathed deeply enough she almost relaxed. And she could almost still feel his presence, his touch, the warmth of his skin. It was awful. It was wonderful. She was a fool. She lay down, let out a long, weary breath. Funny how she'd hoped for change, for something to break the monotony of her days attending to the dowager. Life was a mocking sort of thing, wasn't it? And loveâ⬠¦ Love was the cruelest joke of all. ââ¬Å"Lady Amelia is here to see you, Miss Eversleigh.â⬠Grace jolted upright, blinking furiously. She must have fallen asleep. She could not recall the last time she had done so at midday. ââ¬Å"Lady Amelia?â⬠she echoed, surprised. ââ¬Å"With Lady Elizabeth?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, miss,â⬠the maid informed her. ââ¬Å"She is alone.â⬠ââ¬Å"How curious.â⬠Grace sat up, flexing her feet and hands to awaken her body. ââ¬Å"Please tell her I shall be right there.â⬠She waited for the maid to depart, then went to her small mirror to straighten her hair. It was worse than she'd feared, although she could not be certain whether it had been mussed in sleep or by Mr. Audley. She felt her skin flush at the memory, and she groaned at that. Gathering her determination, she repinned her hair and left the room, walking as briskly as she could, as if speed and a set of squared shoulders could keep all of her worries at bay. Or at the very least, make her look as if she did not care. It did seem odd that Amelia would come to Belgrave without Elizabeth. Grace did not know that she had ever done so before. Certainly not to see her. Grace wondered if her original intention had been to call upon Thomas, who was, as far as she knew, still out. She hurried down the stairs, then turned to make for the front drawing room. But she'd not taken more than a dozen steps before someone grabbed her arm and yanked her into a side room. ââ¬Å"Thomas!â⬠she exclaimed. It was indeed he, somewhat haggard and sporting a nasty bruise under his left eye. His appearance was a shock; she had never seen him looking so rumpled before. His shirt was wrinkled, his cravat missing, and his hair had most definitely not been styled a la Brutus. Or even a la human. And then there were his eyes, which were most uncharacteristically red-rimmed. ââ¬Å"What happened to you?â⬠He put a finger to his lips and shut the door. ââ¬Å"Were you expecting someone else?â⬠he asked, and her cheeks grew warm. Indeed, when she'd felt a strong male hand close around her arm and pull, she had assumed it was Mr. Audley, trying to steal a kiss. Her flush grew deeper as she realized she had been disappointed to realize that it was not. ââ¬Å"No, of course not,â⬠she said quickly, even though she suspected he knew she was lying. She quickly glanced around the room to see if they were alone. ââ¬Å"What is wrong?â⬠ââ¬Å"I needed to speak with you before you see Lady Amelia.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, then you know she is here?â⬠ââ¬Å"I brought her,â⬠he confirmed. Her eyes widened. That was news. He had been out all night and was considerably worse for the wear. She glanced at a nearby clock. It was not yet even noon. When could he have collected Amelia? And where? And why? ââ¬Å"It is a long story,â⬠he said, clearly to cut her off before she could ask any questions. ââ¬Å"But suffice it to say, she will inform you that you were in Stamford this morning, and you invited her back to Belgrave.â⬠Her brows rose. If he was asking her to lie, it was very serious, indeed. ââ¬Å"Thomas, any number of people know quite well that I was not in Stamford this morning.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, but her mother is not among that number.â⬠Grace wasn't sure if she should be shocked or delighted. Had he compromised Amelia? Why else would they need to lie to her mother? ââ¬Å"Er, Thomasâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ she began, unsure of how to proceed. ââ¬Å"I feel I must tell you, given the number of delays thus far, I would imagine that Lady Crowland would be delighted to know ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Oh for God's sake, it is nothing like that,â⬠he muttered. ââ¬Å"Amelia assisted me home when I wasâ⬠ââ¬â he blushed then. Blushed! Thomas! ââ¬â ââ¬Å"impaired.â⬠Grace bit her lip to keep from smiling. It was quite remarkable what a pleasant image that was ââ¬â Thomas allowing himself to be anything less than perfectly composed. ââ¬Å"That was most charitable of her,â⬠she said, perhaps a little too primly. But really, it couldn't be helped. He glared at her, which only made it more difficult to maintain an even face. She cleared her throat. ââ¬Å"Have you, er, considered tidying up?â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠he snapped, ââ¬Å"I rather enjoy looking like a slovenly fool.â⬠Grace winced at that. ââ¬Å"Now listen,â⬠he continued, looking terribly determined. ââ¬Å"Amelia will repeat what I have told you, but it is imperative that you not tell her about Mr. Audley.â⬠ââ¬Å"I would never do that,â⬠Grace said quickly. ââ¬Å"It is not my place.â⬠ââ¬Å"Good.â⬠ââ¬Å"But she will want to know why you were, erâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Oh, dear, how to put it politely? ââ¬Å"You don't know why,â⬠he said firmly. ââ¬Å"Just tell her that. Why would she suspect that you would know more?â⬠ââ¬Å"She knows that I consider you a friend,â⬠Grace said. ââ¬Å"And furthermore, I live here. Servants always know everything. She knows that.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're not a servant,â⬠he muttered. ââ¬Å"I am and you know it,â⬠she replied, almost amused. ââ¬Å"The only difference is that I am allowed to wear finer clothing and occasionally converse with the guests. But I assure you, I am privy to all of the household gossip.â⬠For several seconds he did nothing but stare, as if waiting for her to laugh and say, Only joking! Finally he muttered something under his breath that she was quite certain she was not meant to understand (and indeed she did not; servants' gossip was occasionally risque, but it was never profane). ââ¬Å"For me, Grace,â⬠he said, his eyes boring into hers, ââ¬Å"will you please just tell her you don't know?â⬠It was the closest she had ever heard him come to begging, and it left her disoriented and acutely uncomfortable. ââ¬Å"Of course,â⬠she said quickly. ââ¬Å"You have my word.â⬠He nodded briskly. ââ¬Å"Amelia will be expecting you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. Yes, of course.â⬠Grace hurried to the door, but when her hand touched the knob, she found she was not quite ready to go. She turned around, taking one last look at his face. He was not himself. No one could blame him; it had been a most extraordinary two days. But still, it worried her. ââ¬Å"Will you be all right?â⬠she asked. And immediately regretted that she had done so. His face seemed to move, and twist, and she could not be sure if he was going to laugh or cry. But she did know that she did not want to be witness to either. ââ¬Å"No, don't answer that,â⬠she mumbled, and she ran from the room.

Remedies for Lazy Bones How to Get the Laziness Out of Your Students Essay
Teaching as a rewarding career can be frustrating sometimes when you have difficulty in motivating the students. This is even harder to those lazy students. Mentors are the ones responsible in treating these lazy bones among them. They should stay with these students regardless of the difficulty of your effort. First, teachers should be open-minded. They should consider that students donââ¬â¢t have only one subject ââ¬â that is your subject- and they have to think about their other subjects. They may have six or more subjects to think about and their teachers maybe also give them a task to accomplish. Teachers should understand that. Teachers may think that the task is easy, but you need not to forget that they also have other subjects, which might require more difficult tasks. Second, teachers should be good motivators, considering that students have different interests. Even the lazy students have motivations, and teachers should discover them. As much as teachers reward good students, they should also reward lazy students if they ever participate in class activities. These rewards should not necessarily be gifts or material. Just a praising word like ââ¬Å"good jobâ⬠is enough. When students feel an experience of inner accomplishment and satisfaction, he is more likely to become motivated. Third, they should give the students choices. They need to feel like they have some power and control over their educational experience. Let them work. Act as facilitator. Create opportunities where lazy students can participate. Do not only teach the students but get them involved in class. Teachers should remember important points: The lazy students may not work-unless they are motivated. And, they have to give rewards for accomplishments. Otherwise, motivation may not continue.

Promoting autonomy of oneself and others Essay
Introduction à à à à à à à Autonomy is the ability to have the capacity for self-governance or have self- determination. This is a concept which comes out through various arenas. For example, the moral autonomy is usually governed by the moral laws ( Deci, 2010). Therefore, personal autonomy can be said to be the capacity of a person to pursue actions based on moral content. This paper will compare the philosophical work by Nietzsche and MacIntyre and determine who offers the best tool of promoting autonomy. Over the past centuries, the teachings of Friedrich Nietzsche have transformed and penetrated every realm of social culture in the Western world. In his essays, he examines the significance of peopleââ¬â¢s ability to make promises. He states that to hold to the promises made requires both confidence about the future and very powerful memory that will ensure that certain issues are not forgotten. According to Nietzsche confidence requires one to be predictable or calculable and, therefore, he or she must share common sets of customs and laws that govern his or her behaviour (Risse, 2001). The society and morality play an important part of making a person predictable, therefore, giving the person ability to make promises. This process according to Nietzsche is complicated as it ends up in the ââ¬Ësovereign personââ¬â¢ who can make decisions, not only because the person in question is bounded by social mores but because he or she is the master of his or her own free will. The sovereign of an individual is characterised by tremendous responsibilities of one being free to make claims in regard to his or her future. This sense of responsibility according to Nietzsche is called conscience (Risse, 2001). Nietzsche defines the concept of ââ¬Ëbad conscience and guiltiness using German words for ââ¬Ëdebtââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëguilt.ââ¬â¢ He suggested that, originally, there were no relationship between guilt and accountability or immorality. Punishments were meted on the basis of reprisal and not on the basis of guilt. If a person failed to honour promises, then they were considered to be in debt the person they failed. The debt could then be balanced by punishing or torturing the person. This happened to a person say the creditor who had no interest of getting his money back from the debtor. Thus, the memory of making promises during this time was burdened and the punishments and cruelty ensured that the debtor does not forget his promises next time (Risse, 2001). Macintyreââ¬â¢s in his book, ââ¬ËAfter Virtue (1981)ââ¬â¢ explains his long ethical project. The book diagnoses the rising issues in the society such as ââ¬Ëculture of emotivismââ¬â¢ where the moral language pragmatically manipulates decisions, attitude and decision. According to the book, those moral cultures are said to be a theatre of illusion where the objectives of moral rhetoric masks the decisions. The books examine the part of the community in making the judgments about the truth or falsity. The work by MacIntyre also examines the reasons why human beings need virtues through investigating the social debts and needs of human agents and the part which they were playing in the formation of an independent practical person who can reason (Borden, 2007). The philosophy by Maclntyreââ¬â¢s is very important especially to the fields of communitarian politics and the virtues of ethics. He points out the insignificance of conventional business ethic as an application of the modern moral concepts in decision making. His work in philosophy has lead tremendous renewal of values over the last decades. For example, in his works his discusses the moral condemnation of Stalinism. His presentation of this concept draws two important conclusions related to morality, one is the fact of the peopleââ¬â¢s solidarity in discovering what people want in their moral life (Borden, 2007).. According to MacIntyre morality organises life of the community. As he concludes his book, he says that the concepts of morality are neither historical nor timeless and, therefore, the understanding the developments of historical, ethical concepts can liberate people from any falsity claims (Borden, 2007). MacIntyreââ¬â¢s Aristotelian offers the best tool of promoting autonomy of one self and others compared to Nietzsche because he examines the habits that humans should develop in order to make judgement and act efficiently in the pursuit of the true choices which have a worthy end. His examination has a very rich account on the deliberate activities by human that encompass moral formation and society life. He also accounts why humans have practical wisdom to do what is right based on the freedom of morality. References Borden, S. L. (2007). Marketing Myopia Essay
Industries growth has stopped due to the failure of management the top executives, railroad business because they focus on sciences not on the customers. To keep growing industries must focus on customersââ¬â¢ needs and wants then solely on their products. Many companies are endangering their business due to improper defining of their purposes. DuPont, corning and aluminum industry flourished because they were customer oriented. Taking example of Dry cleaning; has reduced in a remarkable way and may sooner be diminished. Grocery stores have been replaced by super markets. There is nothing like a growth industry but there is an expansion that is because the companies organize themselves to create growth opportunities. Self-deceiving cycle has four conditions. 1. Growth is due to increase in population. 2. Believing that there will be no substituent for any major product. 3. Mass production and declining unit cost for output increase. 4. Preoccupation with a product. The belief that increasing customers will increase your business have a negative impact as you will yourself not bother to expand your business. The petroleum industry thinks that there is no competitor as there is no substitute of oil but many refineries have such huge stock of oil that they can be a threat. Firstly the crude oil was greatly demanded as kerosene was used for lamps until the bulb was invented and the heaters were started with coal burns. If the company would have been product oriented the business would be ended but they started refining the crude oil and made uses out of each product of crude oil. Oil has proved to be the strongest growth and millions of barrels is consumed daily. Production pressure to some companies such as advertisement and commercials are sometimes this much great that they try to get aid of it. But in all this we forget marketing and focus on the needs of seller and marketing fulfill the customer need. Industries now spend billions of rupees in consumer preference and fulfilling their ideas out of Chevroletââ¬â¢s 7000 dealers only 57 provide night maintenance service. Ford invented the assembly line and reduced the cost of production and sold millions of $500 cars. Survival needs a change. Consumer needs change and if a company does not provide it they lose. With the wider perspective the CEOs have to recheck on their vision and the selection of the proper targeted market. This was seems to be successful as the organization was able to find out some opportunities that were initially unseen. This is also helpful in predicting the future progress with the help of business prediction techniques that are currently available. To rise above the myopia one should have his main focus on the strategies and predictive techniques that are used to gain hold on the opportunities. And mainly focus on the customerââ¬â¢s lifetime value. This will maintain the long term profit objectives.

Dormitory rooms Essay
As students move on in their lives after high school to college, many think that their lives will become paradise. With many house rules abandoned and without a curfew, students get the first taste of adulthood. Many think everything will be easy; however, from the dining halls to having no money students learn that being an adult is harder than parents display. Campus life shows students what they perceive is very different than the reality of life. In my opinion, living on campus in a dorm, supplies a student the full experience of the college life. When I imagined living in a dorm room, I imagined a very small room and hardly having any space to walk around. However, the rooms are actually quite big. There is plenty of room to walk around and even play some crazy, goofy games with a roommate. I thought the most exciting part of living on campus was going to be able to meet new people and live in a new environment. Because I am so far from home, my biggest hope was having a roommate who was easy to get along with and could have fun, and I definitely got that. The bathroom situation, I thought, was going to be the worst part of living on campus. However, in reality, it is not as bad as I had thought. As a student-athlete living in a dorm where the entire floor houses athletes, the bathroom has a maximum of five people using the facilities at a time. This works because of each athlete on a different schedule. In actuality, living on campus is very exciting and there should be no worry considering the problem with space, meeting new people, or the bathroom being very full to the point of not being able to use it. As an athlete living on campus at Western Nebraska Community College the athlete receives a dorm family. A dorm family is a family around town that ââ¬Å"adoptsâ⬠the student for the two years while attending the school. The family opens up their hearts and lets the athlete come into the family. The family attends sports events that the athlete plays and supports the athlete. I have a dorm family, and I love them. When I first thought of having a family that would open up their home and family to me I thought it was going to be awkward. However, having a family in town that has opened up their home and hearts has been great. It helped me know that there are people here in town who are willing to help and support me. Additionally, living in the dorms and living on their own, without parents, helps students find many new found freedoms that they did not have before. With living in the dormitories many students stay out late on all nights of the week, because they had a curfew at home and now they do not. The first week of school I stayed out late when I could. However, this staying out late situation did not last long, because I had been slammed with homework and after I was done with my homework all I wanted to do was sleep. With these newfound freedoms I learned very quickly how I was going to manage my time and make sure I got my sleep. When first living on campus I learned how easy I had it while living under my parentsââ¬â¢ roof and the responsibilities that I didnââ¬â¢t have that I have now. When thinking that I was moving out of my parentsââ¬â¢ house I thought it was going to be great. The freedoms I would have were going to be tremendous compared to what I had back home. However, when thinking of the freedoms I never thought of the responsibilities that I was going to have. When at home, laundry was done and living on campus causes me to do my own laundry and pay a dollar fifty for it. At home I always had someone harping on me to do my homework, make my bed, and clean my room, but on campus there is no one around to do that except myself. I had to learn to manage my time wisely and make sure I stayed up in my schoolwork. As a new freshman in college, like myself, sees his or her schedule and thinks, ââ¬Å"man this is going to be a tough year. â⬠This was my reaction when I saw mine at least. As a new student at any school I thought classes were going to be hard, one, because I didnââ¬â¢t know anyone; two, because I want to accomplish a difficult degree; three, because I didnââ¬â¢t know how I was going to manage the homework load and basketball at the same time. Although, when I got to the campus and started the school year I found out that staying caught up with school really was not as hard as many people make college seem. College classes are a lot like high school classes, just a lot more homework. Once I figured out how I could manage my time with basketball, study time, and have somewhat of a social life, my days became easier. Furthermore, expecting high quality food when entering into a college is putting a lot of confidence into the cooks that have to cook for hundreds of people everyday, three times a day. As a freshmen student entering into the college experience, I expected the food to be very good. I understood that the cooks had to cook for many people each day, but I expected that the food was going to have a lot of taste. When I first came to the campus and had my first meal the food was very good. The food on campus did not necessarily get any worse; it had gotten old. When I say old, I do not mean spoiled or rotten, I mean boring. The food all ends up tasting the same each and everyday. By the third week of living and eating on campus at the dining hall I began to realize how much I loved my motherââ¬â¢s home cooked meals. Lastly, money is a big problem for many college students. When I thought I was going to save all my graduation money for college, I thought that I was going to have a lot of money, but as reality turns out I have no money. Living on campus and living on my own made me realize the things I need to buy and the things I just want. The difference between what I needed and what I wanted was crucial for me to determine what I should spend my money on and what I should not. As a student-athlete I go to my parents a lot for money still, because I do have not time for a job considering homework, school, and practice time. In conclusion, campus life shows students that what they perceive is very different than the reality of life. Students living on campus have to share a dorm room with someone, the room is big, and there is not a lot of girls in the bathroom at once. Athletes have a dorm family who ââ¬Å"adoptsâ⬠them and welcomes them into their home. Students have a lot of freedom and can stay out late, but might have a lot of homework so it would be smart to not stay out. Many students also have a schedule with classes that may seem tough, but if they manage their time they will be just fine. The food is not high quality food, and it gets old. Students living on campus begin to miss the home cooked meals. Finally the money problem, I thought I was going to have a lot of money but turns out, I do not have a lot of money, I will buy what I need and not what I want.
Roaccutane Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 8000 words
Roaccutane - Essay Example The purposes of these studies and their problems were ascertained, noting down their findings. A reflective summary is included on clinical implications in the literature portion. The general finding of these studies on the dangerous side effects of isotretinoin use regarding psychiatric side effects including depression is inconclusive. The main issue raised is on the required number of subjects tested. As large as 8000 subjects would needed for a tenable methodology in research as suggested by the British Association of Dermatologists. Connected with this problem is the number of volunteers willing to be tested, considering that the drug is risky. Nevertheless, based on adverse reports, it is still recommended that prescribers follow precautions sent out by the Food and Drug Administration on this drug. The concern for knowing about whether isotretinoin and depression are linked rise from several adverse drug reaction reports (ADRs) received by health authorities, no less than the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the manufacturer of the drug involved. The highly published accounts of suicides committed by young people add to the ever growing need for looking into this problem. Literatures abound regarding these supposition and researches have been conducted to this end. To this day, there is much to be confirmed by way of collating these reports and coming up with a converged position. Acne, for which isotretinoin is usually taken is commonly associated with shame, embarrassment, social assertiveness, and self-confidence. Acne to an adolescent is associated with socialization, appearances in public, interaction with strangers, and even reduced employment opportunities (Tan 2004). As such, seeking treatment involves having access to the best there is. However, what is being bruited about as an excellent drug for the purpose of healing is equally, if not more, being blamed for the demise of some. It is necessary that what should heal should not also put one's health at risk. Isotretinoin has been serving a lot of good to those with acne, but has also been receiving several ADRs in the recent years (Schulte 2005). This study looks into possible links between Isotretinoin and depression. Acne Acne is a disorder of the sebaceous follicles or ducts located on the face, chest and back. They consist of sebaceous (secreting oil) glands associated with small hair follicles. (Cunliffe 1994). It is important to ensure that patients know that their acne is taken seriously and to reassure them that acne is treatable. The fact that it is a slow responding disorder should be stressed to patients (Ibid). Healey and Simpson (1994) identify three aims of treatment as to prevent scarring, limit the duration of the disease and reduce the impact of psychological stress. They emphasise that early treatment and regular review are necessary to prevent scarring. Treatment options are targeted at one or more of the four pathophysiological changes which occur in acne, blockage of the skin ducts, increased sebum

Apple Company Business Environment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
Apple Company Business Environment - Essay Example It is expected that the continuance of this trend will encourage more consumer spending and pave the way for more investment by Apple in developing new products. However, weak economic conditions have continued to exist especially within the education sector in the United States. Many states are experiencing huge deficits in budget, which may hamper Appleââ¬â¢s sales initiatives within the educational sector. Most of Appleââ¬â¢s products and components are manufactured in factories across China through partnerships with suppliers and electronic parts manufacturers like Foxconn and Inventec (Housden, 2008). The fixed exchange rate regime adopted by the Chinese government is adversely affecting any effort by Apple to cut production costs, adding to the problems faced from tariffs and anti-dumping penalties (International trade regulations). Social The use of computers, laptops, Smartphones and music players is growing worldwide, especially in the emerging economies. This presents a good opportunity for Apple to widen its market reach especially within these new and relatively unexplored markets. Customers are more adept at using these electronic devices and the use of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter has only enhanced the importance of computers and Smartphones for daily use (Aasend, 2001). Further, todayââ¬â¢s generation places high value on education wherein strategies like offering discounts on products to students are helping Apple capture consumers from an early age and ensure their long-term commitment and preference for its products. Traditionally, Apple has always competed with Microsoft especially within the Operating Systems (OS) segment.... This paper approves that the preceding sections discuss the far, near and internal business environment of Apple Inc. Apple currently faces several issues that it must focus upon in order to ensure sustainable growth in the future. The firm must engage in its current strategy of licensing and strive to improve the economies of scope between personal computers and electronic media. Thus, the need for Apple over the coming years is to evolve into a learning organization. Besides licensing and partnerships, Apple can also consider the possibilities of joint ventures with other companies, which will allow it to develop various additional competencies. This report makes a conclusion that Appleââ¬â¢s primary strategy should be directed towards developing media-centric technologies and products. Nevertheless, the company should also work towards improving its computing products. In fact, Computer sales accounted for over 40% of Appleââ¬â¢s revenues in 2008. Apple continues to rely on the leadership and vision of its CEO, Steve Jobs. Mr. Jobs holds a considerable equity stake in the company and is one of the main reasons behind Appleââ¬â¢s resurgence from virtual oblivion. The reaction from the markets and consumers if he were to ever step down is rather uncertain. Therefore, the dependence on Mr. Jobs should not be a limiting factor for Apple and the firm must devise ways to operate as an organization. Such an initiative will allow Apple to strengthen its position and act through collective decision-making.

The Validity of Recovered Memories Research Paper
The Validity of Recovered Memories - Research Paper Example However, the validity of such memories is often called into question. The argument over such memories is one of the most contested positions in psychology, sometimes even referred to as the ââ¬Å"memory warsâ⬠(Campbell, 2003). Many researchers claim that these memories are false, even implanted by incompetent therapists, while therapists most often stand behind the claims of their patients. Looking into the controversy surrounding recovered memories versus false memories, the process of memory repression, and some of the implications brings us to a realization of just how widespread and important this debate can be. Recovered Memories vs False Memories Individuals who recovered memories in therapy and with the help of a therapist were often unsurprised to recover memories of childhood sexual abuse. However, spontaneously recovered memories often surprised those who gained these memories. More tellingly, spontaneously recovered memories and continuous memories, those that were never repressed and therefore never had to be recovered, were much more likely to be corroborated by physical evidence than memories recovered in therapy (Geraerts et al., 2007). This could indicate that the presence of the therapist pushed people into ââ¬Å"recallingâ⬠situations of sexual abuse that never occurred because the therapist expected to find such memories. In opposition to the situation of coaxed-out memory under the control of a therapist for the first time since the event occurred, people who report such spontaneous memory recovery may actually have ââ¬Å"recoveredâ⬠and then forgotten the same memory numerous time. This does not invalidate the correctness of the memory; however, such repeated incidences of forgetting and remembering does indicate the possibility that the memory was never truly repressed under the same system that would be used for completely repressed memories that require a therapist's assistance to recover (Geraerts et al., 2009). Resea rch shows that memories of terrible events, including being the one to commit terrible crimes, can be created in the subject's mind from nothing, and researchers tend to believe that recovered memories are generally of this type. Therapists, however, are more inclined to believe that such vivid memories cannot be created wholesale and instead that recovered memories are memories of true events; they may understand the existence of false recovered memories but believe that the incidence is much lower than a researcher may believe (Davis & Loftus, 2009). Memories of events can also be altered or distorted by such experiences as leading questions, suggestions, and incorrect conversations with other witnesses of the same scene. Especially telling for the possibility of recovered memories involving childhood sexual abuse in research results is the possibility of remembering accomplices who weren't present during the original scenes. An additional research study on recovered memories resu lted in up to one-quarter of the subjects believing that they had been lost in the mall as small children, when that event was presented as part of a series of actual events. This was only done on subjects whose parents stated that such an event had never occurred, so there was little possibility of confusing an actual childhood memory with the memory created as part of the research (Laney &

My Preferred Learning Style Personal Statement Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
My Preferred Learning Style - Personal Statement Example Learning styles are more concerned with oneââ¬â¢s preferred learning style rather than what learners learn. A student shows consistency in learning style by reacting to and employing stimuli in relation to learning. Keefe (1979) defines learning styles as the ââ¬Å"composite of characteristic cognitive, affective, and physiological factors that serve as relatively stable indicators of how a learner perceives interacts with, and responds to the learning environmentâ⬠(as cited in NW Link, 2011). Stewart and Felicetti (1992) define learning styles as those ââ¬Å"educational conditions under which a student is most likely to learn,â⬠thus, stressing on the role of preferred learning styles (as cited in NW Link, 2011). According to the principles of the Dunn and Dunn learning styles system, students always prefer to learn in their learning style and perform better. From the teaching point of view, if teachers follow studentsââ¬â¢ processing styles out of the global-analytical continuum or any of their preferred styles from kinesthetic, tactile, auditory, and visual, the learning process can be made faster among students (Dybvig and Church, 2010). Generally, it is noticed that students cannot learn faster because they are not taught in their preferred and distinct learning style. Ideally, students need to inculcate the various leaning methods so that learning does not become an arduous task for them by depending solely on their preferred learning style only, although they may excel in talent and intelligence possessing above average sharpness in comprehending the learning process (Dybvig and Church, 2010). Students need to strengthen various learning ways where they are not competent enough.Ã
